| Alcoholism & Denial
Question:
I have a dear friend who drinks too much. His theory is that if he dilutes the vodka he drinks, and doesn't drink it straight, it won't hurt him, no matter how much he drinks. He is highly educated, and will not be convinced that this is not true. I need expert advice about this matter and don't know where to find it. He drinks up to 8 ounces every night. On an empty stomach. Which in my opinion makes it even worse. Straight or diluted. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Response:
Hello C
It is difficult to convince people about the extent of their drinking problem when they are in denial. Highly educated people are at times worse because they have enough logic to rationalize and intellectualize away the problem.
The best place to get concrete information would be the alcoholism unit of your local hospital. They would be willing to talk to him on the phone and mail him some brochures. Another source is the local AA meetings where he can check with other alcoholics whether this is serious or not.
Hope this helps
