Insomnia

Question:
Hi Shazia, I am not sleeping very well at all. Been going on for a long time...At least a year. I'm depressed & quite anxious. Would prefer not taking medication, but may have to. Don't want to take anti-depression drugs that make gain weight, or keep me up at night like what I hear about Zoloft, Celexa, or Paxil. I see a therapist. Do you have any ideas.

Thank you,

Response:
Insomnia is related to both anxiety and depression. Medication does help, and not all meds make you gain weight. You might have to weigh the potential benefit of medication with the harm of lack of sleep or weight gain to convince yourself of what you need the most. It is important to trust your doctor to plan an appropriate treatment plan for you.
Are you following any physical activity regimen? Do you eat healthy? Relaxation exercises and meditation can also be useful. Continue with therapy to address these issues.
