Problems with Boss

Question:
I have been having problems with my boss.  My co-worker says she is passive-aggressive, but when I looked that up it does not fit her.  She is a perfectionist to the point of being obsessive compulsive.  She has to straighten the spreads on the beds at her home every morning, even though NO ONE has slept in them.  She vaccums every day and all vaccum marks must go in the same direction.  Although I do not care what she does at home, she is starting to drive me nuts at work.  She is convinced I am having an affair with a married man and must comment on this whenever she can.  She talks about me to my co-workers and is even dictating my schedule.  She makes sure that I know SHE is the manager and I am the peon.  She seems to fit this Narcasstic personality, she always wants everyone to know how perfect she is and told us one time that she went to finishing school, so she is more refined than the rest of us.  Sorry to go on like this, is there any special way to deal with this type of person?  I have been trying to ignore the rude comments she makes, but I\'m beginning to worry that she will somehow cause me to lose my job, even though she says I do good work.
Thanks for your help.

Response:
Regardless of any diagnosis, the best way to deal with irrational and idiosyncratic behaviors is to overlook them.  It is best to not take them personally or to react to them.  Usually these behaviors are indicative of pathology and unless the person seeks treatment for it, there is not much you can say or do to correct them.

Do the other people in the office feel the same way about her?  If she is like this with everyone, talk to them and see how they deal with her.  Have you talked to her directly about spreading rumors about you?  It is possible that your company has some rules for such actions that you could check.  The Human Resources Dept should be able to help you with it.

Unless you want to take a more assertive stance, confront her and are willing to take it up the chain of command to her superiors, and willing to take the consequences of such an action.  Only you can better judge your own situation if that would be a productive way of dealing with it or not.
